Sara Jensen, a recent graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, was raised in Carbondale, Colorado, where her connection to the outdoors and art evolved together. Sara spent her childhood outside exploring the mountains through skiing, biking, kayaking, hiking, and backpacking. Learning about herself through environments and the interactions with the outdoors has driven a want to create. Sara has connected most deeply to the medium of ceramics.

Artist Statement

I have found a fascination in the way that place and memory intertwine to create connection. An understanding of the way time moves through a place and how you move through it as well. Ceramics has become a way to reflect and understand these places through a translation of the hands. Working with clay is a dance where I can see the reflection of my own motion in the clay.

I have been understanding my interactions with place through two lenses. One is through the smaller scale observations and curiosities within forces of the outdoors. Moments I am not directly involved in but intrigue me. For example, the way that water sculpts and moves land, the way light filters through canyon walls, and the interaction between the stone of a river bed and the water that flows through it. These curiosities most often become inspiration for slipcasting. The process of mold making and being able to capture details and moments almost beyond the human touch.
The other way I think about place is through a larger-scale lens. How these connections to environments build up over time. If I could pick up a piece of earth from each place that has struck a cord within me and pile them up. Similar to being able to look through the layers of a geological strata and see the history of the earth. Each place becomes a layer of the sculpture. And as the places stack up they merge into one. They have a sense of movement in the vain of breathing and nourishment. They reflect the way moving through an environment has cultivated meaning in my own life.
